Often it is quoted that the usage statistics and market share of WordPress runs over 30% of websites on the internet.
One such source of usage stats is w3techs WordPress usage report.
W3Tech’s WordPress Usage Results
WordPress is used by 63.5% of all the websites whose content management system we know. This is 37.8% of all websites.
The results from W3Tech’s report start with the versions of WordPress; where V5 has over 79%. Version 5 of WordPress was released way back in December 2018.
Surprisingly version 1 (< 0.1%) and v2 (< 0.2%) are still in use. Due to the high number of WordPress installs on the internet, this is not insignificant. The current release version is 5.4 – code named
Adderley (July 2020).
WordPress Plugin Usage
Next up is the plugin usage or subcategories as W3Tech calls them.
There is no surprise that WooCommerce is high on the list at 17%. WooCommerce is also owned by Automattic; the owners of WordPress and WordPress.com, the commercial arm of the open-source wordpress.org. From the plugin page, WooCommerce has over 5 Million installs.
Additional plugins owned by Automattic are bbPress (Bulletin Board or Forum) and BuddyPress (Groupware) with 0.8% and 0.6% respectively.
There is quite a few photo gallery plugins listed with top rankings; ranging from Web-Dorado Photo Gallery to Envira Gallery.
